Tips for Winter Driving in Columbus, Ohio

For some, the winter months bring excitement and a sense of adventure. Others however, dread this time of year for the various problems it may bring. One of the major concerns that Columbus residents especially have during the winter are the driving conditions. The legal team here at Walton + Brown, L.L.P. care about the well-being of the people in our city. This is why we have put together a list of tips for winter driving and how you can avoid unnecessary collisions whilst enduring the tundra.

  1. Keep it slow and steady: There are no speed limits for when the snow is falling. Know your vehicle, and keep it at a reasonable speed when driving in icy conditions. It is recommended to even keep your vehicle below the speed limits to ensure you have enough reaction time to slow down, stop, and turn.
  2. Drive with Necessary Equipment: Make sure your vehicle is stocked with the proper equipment in cases of emergency. Simple items like an ice pick (assuming you leave your car out in the snow for long periods of time) can ensure you have a full view of visibility when maneuvering on the road.
  3. Watch out for Other Drivers: Although you may be confident in your own driving abilities, it does not mean that others are. Pay extra attention to what other drivers are doing so you can improve your reaction time. A split second reaction could make the difference.
  4. Use Proper Lights: This is especially important during snowfall when visibility is low. Just as you would turn your lights on during a rainstorm, the same should apply when it is snowing. Lights can let others see your vehicle more clearly, and allow you to see any obstacles in your path.
  5. Check your Tires: Ensuring that your tires are inflated can increase the tread they experience on the road. Tires with worn out tread can make it easy to slide on snow and ice.
  6. Watch your Gas: Nothing is worse than running out of gas in a cold snowstorm. Pulling your vehicle over to the side of the road due to an empty tank increases the danger for other drivers too, especially during a snowstorm.
  7. Avoid Driving if Possible: While it might sound redundant, the best way to avoid accidents while driving is to not drive at all! We understand that this is not always a possibility, but if you are able to avoid driving, we advise you to do so.
