Olympic Medalist Boxer Oshae Jones Files Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit Against Toledo Police Officer Ashlyn Pluff and the City of Toledo
(Toledo, OH) August 1, 2023 – Olympic medalist and professional boxer Oshae Jones announced today that she has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Toledo Police Officer Ashlyn Pluff and the City of Toledo. The lawsuit alleges the Jones’ constitutional rights were violated through the excessive use of force and racial discrimination amongst other claims, during a traumatic incident that occurred on July 31, 2022.
During the incident, Jones, a highly acclaimed athlete who represented the United States in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, was attacked by Officer Pluff. Officer Pluff engaged in an unjustified and excessive use of force against Ms. Jones, leading to physical injuries and emotional distress. Moreover, Ms. Jones maintains that the actions taken against her were driven by racial discrimination, a deeply concerning issue that demands immediate attention and accountability.
Oshae Jones, speaking about the lawsuit, stated, "As a proud representative of the United States and an Olympic medalist, I have always upheld the values of fairness, justice, and equality. It is disheartening to find myself in a situation where these values were not reciprocated. I firmly believe that no individual should endure such treatment, and I am taking this stand not only for myself but for all those who have been victims of injustice and discrimination."
The civil rights lawsuit seeks to hold Officer Ashlyn Pluff and the City of Toledo accountable for their actions and seeks appropriate damages for the harm inflicted upon Ms. Jones physically, emotionally, and professionally. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that the actions taken against Jones are emblematic of a pattern and practice of behavior by the Toledo Police Department.
Ms. Jones' legal representation, led by civil rights attorney Sean Walton, Jr. of Walton + Brown, LLP., based in Columbus, Ohio, has vowed to pursue justice vigorously on her behalf. They are committed to ensuring that those responsible for the violation of Ms. Jones' civil rights are held accountable, and that such incidents are prevented in the future through proper training and policies.
