Family of Tyre King Asks for Moment of Silence in Remembrance

SEPTEMBER 14, 2017 – COLUMBUS, OHIO: On this day, exactly one year ago, Columbus Division of Police Officer Bryan Mason shot and killed 13-year-old Tyre King. Tyre was an active child with a big heart. In the days after his death, teachers and youth sports coaches came forward expressing how much of a joy their time with him had been. His family and friends mourned his loss and they prayed that there would be some measure of accountability for Officer Bryan Mason. Instead, the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office declined to indict Officer Mason on any criminal charges, and the Columbus Division of Police continues to employ Officer Mason despite Tyre's death being his fourth shooting in six years.

As the family and their legal team continues to fight for justice for Tyre one year later, they ask that you remember him as the sweet kid that he was known to be. In the aftermath of a traumatic event people often look to assign blame and responsibility. Evidence points to 5'0", 100lbs. Tyre running away at the time that he was shot, depicting a scared child not posing a dangerous threat at the time he was shot and killed. As the family fights for accountability for the adult that made the decision to kill Tyre, they ask that you remember Tyre as a cheerful, loving child and hold his memory high. The family asks that all who care to do so participate in a moment of silence for Tyre at the time he was pronounced dead, 8:25pm. Today marks an unfortunate anniversary, but his spirit lives on.
